Thailand 2/20-22/20

2/20/20

It is 11 pm. We had a very full day around Bangkok visiting temples and going to kick boxing tonight.  I need to get to bed in order to get some sleep, and I cant make my usual blog entry, although I think I took pretty good notes.

2/20-22. Thailand

In the Akara Hotel.  Up for the phenomenal breakfast on the 16th floor, Eastern and Western food with a coffee station, a salad station, a noodle station an omelette station , and it just keeps going.  Full stomach for a full day.

The images of the King of Thailand are ever present hanging from buildings, etc.  He has a very strong presence in his country.

We got the concierge to grab us a cab to the big temple area in downtown Bangkok, as we approached the Royal Palace and Temple area, we were intercepted by a guy claiming he was a teacher, and spoke good English.  He said the Temple was closed for and official ceremony and would reopen at 1.  For 80 baht, he got us a Tuk Tuk driver who took the 4 of us to the Standing Buddah, and the Sitting Buddha.

We walked along the waterfront as well thinking of a ferry ride to the temple on the other side, and the hawkers were very aggressive.

Passing shops outside the temple, the vendors watched for tourists who had “unauthorized” clothing on for temple entry, which for males was shorts.  They do a booming business on those baggy cotton long pants with elephant print for the ill clad tourists.  I can’t imagine ever wearing those pants back home.  Siam pants…haha.

Went into the Temple of the Emerald Buddha which was very ornate.  Almost like the Sistine Chapel of the East.  The murals on the walls were beautiful and the small Buddha at the top is made of emerald.

All of the temples require your shoes to be removed

At the grand palace the restroom was being cleaned by a lady who wouldn’t leave when the men came in, and as I stepped up to the urinal she started laughing.  Not sure what that meant, but the Asian privacy thing is a little different than were used to.

The Palace and its temples were spectacular, all restored, and beautiful, golden with jewel and mirror inlays everywhere.  And, a really cool model of Angkor Wat was also on the grounds, reminding us of our days in Cambodia.

We were shuttled off to another Thai traditional performance at a local theatre.  Very nice, and I wasn’t lulled to sleep as I was at the Water Puppet theatre.  I was really interested in the music as there was a reed instrument that the guy was blowing with all his might and his cheeks puffed out for the whole performance.  I was also impressed at the ability of the girl dancers who could pose with their hands flexed back. Some sign of Thai beauty that is hard to do without a lot of practice apparently.  The Thai artistic dance was Khon?

We also visited the Giant Buddah at the Wat Pho temple, so sitting, giant, standing, and emerald.  He is a popular dude in this country.  We debated what the giant Buddha was made of, and the standing joke was, “what if there were only a device…….handheld that you could type a question into, and the answer would appear.”  Well the answer to that one was brick and stuccoed over and gilded.  My initial thought was wood.  That thing has been there since the late 1800s apparently.

The first school of Thai massage was also at this temple, and those massage shops are all over town.  Supposedly utilizing pressure points, very popular with the Thai people.

The Giant is 15m by 46 m and the walls are lined with bronze bowls that tourists buy bags of change to deposit into each successive bowl making a chime, and bringing good luck.

This evening we went to see kick boxing at the Rajadamnern stadium, the national sport of Thailand.  There was a little bit of confusion from the cab driver as to which stadium to go to, and we resolved that with mere minutes to spare.  Once we got there, we were ushered to our ringside seats.

The boxers have a very elaborate and ceremonial pre fight ritual.  First they bow to the steps, then to the corner, then the center of the ring, and then they walk the whole perimeter of the ring, and then do a little ceremonial dance before the fight begins.

Before any fights were held, we stood for the National Anthem,.  The fighters were in the best shape of any athletes I have ever observed, and as the fight begins, the band starts with a heavy kettle drum rhythm which sounds like the crescendo leading up to the climax in a horror show.  Very foreboding and intense.

Out in the stands the spectators are betting and taking wagers, as the boxers seem so cool and the crowd and coaches seem so animated.

A lot of younger looking boxers, mostly 120 pounds and under.  Very entertaining for Americans who are used to other types of boxing than Muay Thai.

2/21/20

Shuttled from hotel about an hour and a half to the biggest floating market in Thailand.  The long tail boats awaited us at the launch station, and we were guided down concrete walled canals (narrow) through palm plantation to the vendor lined markets of trinkets, souvniers, and a lot of touristy wares.  Pretty cool to see though.

We have been lucky with the corona virus which has kept the usual throngs of Chinese tourists at bay.  The crowd scene would’ve been at least doubled, and the stress levels with it with the usual numbers.  That is of course, if no-one catches the virus……….

This market was the Damnoen Saduk in Ratchabutl province.  Most famous and popular, vendors lining the small canals on both sides.

Lots of bargaining, and when we got back they had taken our picture and had saucers for sale with our pictures embossed on them.  They went unpurchased.

Although we didn’t get the boat up to speed, those long tail boats are bad ass, with v8 turbo engines on them, and drivers who make some mean maneuvering inside the canal walls and around other boats.

Stopped at Peninsula tailors on the way back, fitted for a tux by “Lucky”. All were impressed by the shop, and they were able to have that tux tailored in 24 hours, amazing service.

Tonight we did a food tour, after meeting Jaaa (Jahn) at the train station, trying to find the rendezvous point was like a geo caching game, but we finally did.  At exit 3.  Had some amazing local food, venturing into China town, and down some back allies that we never would’ve gone down,  Amazing mango, salads, even ate insects.  Not my favorite, but interesting none the less.  Fried dough, coconut custard dip, in full on local restaurants.

On the way home I got a “grab” which was the Thai version of uber or lyft. And got back to hotel at 2130 for second fitting of tux.

SE Asia home leg!

2/22-23

Our last day of the trip in Thailand was a pretty mellow one with not much going on.  We had to check out of the hotel at noon, so I did get in a quick workout, as well as the nice breakfast provided by the Akara on the 16th floor.

Kurt and I wandered around the corner to a local market selling the usual souvenir trinkets and curios, and I impulsively bought a fake Rolex.  I had buyers remorse, but it looks good, and seems to keep semi accurate time (for now).  My big ticket item for our wait was having my tux delivered at 2.  Since we had already checked out of our room, we sat around in the lobby for awhile,  Kurt, Tim and Mark did go out for lunch.

At 2 sharp, the guy from Peninsula Tailors showed up.  The 3 pilot shirts fit perfectly, and the pants and coat were also a good fit.  However, there was a small “dimple” in the silk lapel which looked not quite right.  The courier delivery guy from the shop ran that back and had it fixed in about an hour.  Pretty amazing service since that tux and shirt were fitted only a day prior. Barely 24 hours for fitting, refitting, delivery and correction.

We set off for the BKK airport at about 5.  About that time we learned that there were 2 airports in Bangkok.  In fact, we had flown into the secondary airport arriving from Siem Reap, and were flying out of BKK, totally different.  Due to the confusion we had getting to the kickboxing stadium a couple of nights earlier due to cab communication difficulties we checked and rechecked with our driver that we were in fact going to the correct airport.

Right after checking in and leaving the checked baggage, I feel a tap on my shoulder and turn to see my old neighbor Jeff Hoary, and his Thai wife, Poi.  Very wild for both of us, and he was on our Emirates flight to Dubai, and then he was flying to MCO and we to FLL.  I told Kurt that I was firing my travel agent on that knowledge.  It was nice to catch up with Jeff.

Two flights home, and it is time.  Ready to be home. First flight 8 hours BKK to Dubai on an A380.  Had some “ass hat” sitting behind me that would kick my chair upon reclining, requiring flight attendant intervention.  I was really  pissed.

Second flight 16 whopping hours.  Longest time ever on an aircraft.  Dozing in and out without any real “sustained” sleep, but not doing so bad.  Rebecca’s homeopathic jet lag pills must be doing the trick.  We’ll see how the drive from FLL to Cocoa Beach goes.

I got a chance to rap with the Nigerian FO whose traveling with his family for the 56 hour layover in Fll.

The Captain just made the announcement that we are over the Bahamas and will soon be starting our descent.  What a great trip, albeit a little long at the end, hanging with some great guys, Kurt, Tim, Mark and Mark and Rick. 4 countries, 17 days, multiple destinations, and great experiences.  Now its (almost) back to reality.

Pre-MTB Vegas meet up

A great bunch of my dearest Navy buddies showed up in Las Vegas in order to preposition for our annual St. George MTB trip.

MTB 10/7/19

October 7, 2019

Nothing short of a stellar day.  Our hotel last night was the Desert Garden Inn in St. George UT.  Up this morning for a gratis breakfast, and then met the guides from Western Spirit, Tim and Matt.  Matt was our guide from a previous ride at Gooseberry Mesa.  A lot of introductions from the other riders, Thor, Chuck, and Mary.  All good riders.

We transported out to Santa Clara river Reserve For the ride, and rode Sidewinder, Barrel Roll.   Some instruction given for riding some technical. About 12 miles ridden today.  Q and Sully always bombing in the lead, while Mac, Tom and I are about front 1/3 and seem to energize each other.

Reflection on riding.Especially technical.  I have to be mindful and in the moment or else I will crash.  But it is a really good feeling to exhibit that level of focus, and not be all monkey minded.

Great times around the campfire as Tom plays us tunes, and we dine on the yummy Western Spirit meals.  Really happy being around my dear friends for decades.  It is just so darned cool.  Good tent weather tonight, its supposed to be in the 20s in a few days.  I already borrowed a sleeping bag from WS.

MTB 10/8/19

October  8, 2019

Its early am, and I really had a fitful night of sleep. Not too sure why, since temperature was great, and I had a good Thermarest pad.  Even took an ibuprofen PM at about 2 last night. Hmmm, great fitness yesterday too, with riding.  We’ll see how today goes, since the sleep was fitful.

P.m.  Just finished our epic 14 mile ride all along the rim of the Gooseberry Mesa.  Just fantastic views, single track trails and very technical sections.  A really great feeling to finish.  Mac and I felt really strong, and kept each other’s vibe strong.  A really sunny warm day, not a precursor of the forecast which has some cold temps stating tomorrow night with 50 mph gusts.    Having such a great time with the greatest bunch of guys ever.

MTB 10/9/19

October 9,2019

Just hopped into my tent, because the weather has arrived, so far in the form of high winds.  The temps aren’t even that cold yet tonight, but the wind is howling, and in my tent there is already a light dusting of red dust from the winds, and tent not being properly secured.  We just were hunkered around the campfire after another great meal, this time of meatballs and veggies, I opted for the gluten free pasta, still carbs, =but it has been hard to avoid that.

Rode the Little Creek Canyon trails which overlooks the valley towards Gooseberry Mesa and
Zion.   Simply beautiful. What fun times on the trails.  I am feeling in pretty good shape, and I needed my wingman Mac to feel in the zone today.  Never got my rhythm/vibe down today, but had loads of fun.  Saw some indian petroglyphs in the “desert varnish” and followed the cairns, rock piles designating the trails.

Just keep having epic days of mountain biking.  Down back rim of Gooseberry Mesa. Fun times. Mostly downhill. A lot of technical. Definitely carrying my own. Love hanging with these guys

10/11/2019

Tucked into a real bed in Las Vegas, Sahara again for the 3 rd time this week.  Almost felt like coming home.  Up early after the best night of sleep I had in the tent.  The real cold temps never quite made it, and the wind thankfully dropped off.  The nights sleep felt great.

We moved out a little quicker this morning for our last day of riding. It entailed the usual 0730 “coffee” call, but the usual cold breakfast (earlier than the hot) was accompanied by the hot in order to head out.  Packed up and were on the road at 0930.

Went down towards the town of Hurricane, UT to ride the JEM trail. It was loads of fun, as the first 6 or 7 miles were a flowy downhill.  Whoops all around!!!  At the intersection of the Cryptobiotic and JEM trail, we took Cryptobiotic and continued down to the edge of the Hurricane Canal, and rode the rim trail.  It got a little interesting at this point.

The pack leaders as usual were Q, Sully, and Mac, also Thor was with them.  I had fallen back, and they apparently missed the turn over the China Wash to continue on Rim Trail.   Well, as I proceeded, not seeing anyone ahead, began to feel like I was on the wrong trail.  However, it appeared that I was heading towards Hurricane, so I continued, even passing a hiker inquiring if the guys were ahead.

Along about this time, i receive a call from Sully asking about the trail.  I was uncertain but continued and it turned out I was on the right trail.  Everyone joined up and we did the victory descent on the road to Hurricane.

Stopping in the town park, we had a nice lunch, and said our thanks to the guides, Matt and Tim as well as the non-Navy riders: Chuck, Mary, and Thor.

At St. George, we said goodbye to Bill Hart, and continued to Vegas.  Had dinner at the Peppermill and came back to watch the Nationals beat St. Louis, and Mac was ecstatic,

It was a great week, hanging with some very special bros, and I am happy to be going home tomorrow, nothing broken, and great memories of a solid week of mountain biking.
